Back pain mattress

Which mattress helps against back pain?

Orthopedic mattress

An orthopedic mattress is designed to support the spine well in every lying position and to adapt pointwise to the body. Additionally, an orthopedic mattress should not create counterpressure when loaded with body weight. Instead, the pressure exerted by the body is distributed over the entire sleeping surface in orthopedic mattresses, which counteracts muscle tension and circulatory disorders. Especially pressure-sensitive and problematic body areas such as the spine and intervertebral discs are well relieved and can sufficiently regenerate during sleep. A mattress should have different zones. It should give way in the shoulder and pelvic area. When lying on the back, the buttocks must be able to sink in. You should also notice that the mattress is in contact with the waist and provides gentle support. It is very important that it does not press.

Degrees of firmness for the back pain mattress

Orthopedists recommend purchasing cold foam mattresses or viscoelastic mattresses for back problems. Both types of mattresses adapt to the body – regardless of sleeping position – and offer a high point elasticity. A good mattress should support the normal shape of the spine during sleep and gently transfer the underlying support to the human body. Mattresses that are too soft or too hard are therefore very unsuitable – especially in the case of a herniated disc.

You should pay attention to:

  • medium-firm mattress with variable firmness level
  • soft, point-elastic surface
  • mattress with multiple comfort zones (three to five comfort zones)
  • perfect combination of pillow, mattress, and slatted frame

Mattresses are classified into three firmness levels:

  • H1 (soft)
  • H2 (medium)
  • H3 (hard)

The manufacturer's recommendation for a firmness level is based on body weight. A man who weighs over 80 kilos is recommended H3. However, one must decide individually what is best for oneself. It is best to try out the firmness levels; mattresses that have both firmness levels H2 and H3 are also useful. This way, you only need to flip the mattress to change the firmness level. However, the firmness levels are not standardized; H3 is not the same as H3. It is best to test extensively which firmness level fits.

Mattress type cold foam mattress

A cold foam mattress combines many positive properties: on the one hand, cold foam mattresses are very point-elastic, meaning they yield at the right places, and on the other hand, they provide good support. Additionally, compared to other mattresses, they have very good breathability, positively influencing the sleep climate.

Mattress type Latex mattresses

The latex mattress has excellent lying properties and a high adaptability to the body and slatted frame. Latex mattresses are often used by individuals with back and joint problems. They typically have a high own weight.

Mattress type Gel mattresses

Gel mattresses are particularly suitable for demanding individuals with a sensitive back and a sensitive musculature. Annoying pressure points on the body are a thing of the past, thanks to the viscous material that absorbs the weight of the sleeping body and does not return it.

Mattress type Innerspring mattresses

The basis of every innerspring mattress is, as the name implies, the innerspring. This system consists of several interconnected steel springs. The special feature of these innerspring models is the property that they return directly to their original position after a load. This is only possible because only compression springs are used in the manufacturing process. The task of the compression springs is to support the body while lying down, thus ensuring a very straight lying surface. This, in turn, provides for a as comfortable lying position, which protects both the back and the neck area. It is one of the most popular mattresses, but what is an innerspring mattress anyway? The term innerspring mattress refers to the core. In an innerspring mattress, the core of the mattress consists of a multitude of individual or interwoven springs that are compressed by the body weight of the sleeper, yielding and thus reacting point-elastically to the body.

Mattress type VVisco mattresses

Visco mattresses are also known as mattresses with memory foam. The soft polymer foam inside the mattress was originally developed by NASA, which shows how innovative this technology is. Due to the special composition of the visco foam, it yields even under light pressure. For a resting body, this means that it can sink into the mattress. This creates a kind of depression that is precisely adapted to the body contours of the sleeper. In this way, the spine, joints, and also the intervertebral discs are permanently relieved.

Sleeping zones for the back pain mattress

A mattress can be divided into several sleeping zones to enable a body-conforming bedding. Each body part of a person has an individual weight, and this must be optimally balanced by the mattress. Heavier areas like shoulders and buttocks need to sink in deeper to ensure a natural shape of the spine even in the sleeping position. Depending on the body part, a mattress is subjected to varying degrees of pressure in some areas more than in others. Sleeping zones (also called hardness zones) ensure that the varying pressures caused by the body are balanced. The goal of sleeping zones is to achieve an optimal adaptation of the mattress to the body contour, which leads to increased sleeping comfort.

Slatted frames

The best mattress is useless without good support. Today, the slatted frame does not necessarily have to be made of wood. There are now a whole range of different solutions. Experts refer to it as a sleep system. The same applies to the support: the support must be individually adjustable for shoulders and pelvis; the more differentiated, the better. Slatted frames made of beech wood are the most stable, but it is also important how many times the slats are glued. A slatted frame comes in various designs. There are roll-up slatted frames, electric slatted frames, multi-zone slatted frames, plate frames, and plate slatted frames.

Sleeping position for Side sleeper

Most people sleep on their side every night. They face the same problem as back sleepers – the spine bends if it is not properly supported. It is not pressed up or down like with back sleeping, but to the side: back pain is not impressed by such details and still creeps in. Additionally, many side sleepers complain about tension in the neck. Side sleepers should pay attention to these points:

  • the cervical spine should be relieved.
  • The shoulders should be able to sink into the mattress.
  • The point elasticity of the mattress should be chosen so that the spine forms a line and cannot sag.

Sleeping position for stomach sleepers

In general, there are no special mattresses for stomach sleepers, but those who prefer this sleeping position can, of course, find the optimal sleeping surface for them with good advice. A mattress that is too hard will press the spine into an unnatural shape, particularly affecting the lower back and lumbar vertebrae. As a stomach sleeper, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • The mattress should relieve the spine. This refers not only to the spine itself but also to the back muscles. With a mattress that is too firm, no muscle can relax.
  • The mattress must also not be too hard for a second reason, as the body cannot sink in properly, resulting in a kink in the spine.
  • To avoid overstretching the lumbar region, a mattress is needed that is not too soft on the other hand: The lower back must be supported, the pelvis stabilized, and the spine relaxed.

Sleeping position for back sleepers

To avoid a painful awakening in the morning, it is important to relieve the back while sleeping. At first glance, a mattress appears flat, but our spine has a double-S shape. This does not quite match, as a mattress that is too hard pushes the back into a hollow back, while one that is too soft allows it to sag. Back sleepers should pay attention to the following points:

  • The mattress should provide particular support in the lumbar region, as this is where the center of gravity of the back sleeper is, otherwise it sinks in too far.
  • The neck also needs support to prevent tension.
  • A neck pillow can be used to ideally support the cervical spine.

What to pay attention to with back pain

When the back hurts, the cause must first be determined. There are many reasons why there might be a twinge in the back. A diagnosis by a doctor is good, and the posture of the back while sitting and lying down should also be checked. The back punishes you if it is not properly supported, or if we adopt a wrong posture while sitting. To find out which seating furniture or mattress is good for our back, some research is needed. The internet is a good source of information, but a consultation does not replace this. Mattresses are our companions, and must be chosen carefully. The better the mattress fits you, the more your back will thank you.

Causes of back pain

Back pain can have various causes. Occasional back pain is something almost everyone knows. But chronic back pain is also familiar to many: In Germany, 22 percent of women and 15 percent of men are affected – that's about one in five women and one in seven men. The frequency of back pain increases with age, with women overall reporting back pain more often than men. Acute back pain occurs far more frequently than chronic back pain. Some statistics suggest that back pain occurs more often in Germany than in the past. However, it cannot be said with certainty yet, as the results of various studies and statistics are not easily comparable. There are many possible causes of back pain – the actual cause of the pain is not always identifiable.

How can back pain arise?

Back pain can have both physical and psychological causes (e.g., stress) – often these components influence each other. In many cases, however, simply too little movement or weak back and abdominal muscles is the cause of back pain. One-sided postures, for example at the workplace, can promote back pain. A possible consequence is muscle tension in the back area, which sooner or later leads to actual back pain – because tense, hard muscles can irritate adjacent nerves, which ultimately manifests as pain.

Wrong mattress as a cause

If you choose the wrong mattress, or if the mattress is too old, back pain can occur. The causes are as follows:

  • Hip sinks too far
  • Spine sags
  • Compression and overstretching of the ligaments and muscles can follow.
  • Discs may not charge properly.
  • Sleep phases can be interrupted.

Since the body's center hangs "down" for several hours every night, this can lead to tension and pain in the lumbar region. Colloquially, we then refer to this as back pain in the center of the body. Typically, this pain disappears during the day when your muscles have relaxed. However, damage to the musculoskeletal system can occur due to a mattress that has been used for a long time, leading to herniated discs.
