Cotton blanket
What are the advantages of a cotton blanket?
Cotton blanket made from natural fibers
Cotton is the natural fiber that is most commonly used for the production of textiles, thanks to its unique structure and properties. The covers of the Mister Sandman mattresses are also made of cotton. It is obtained from the seed hairs of the plant. The plants mainly grow in the tropics and subtropics. Cotton is distinguished between long and short fibers. The fiber hairs consist of 95% cellulose. The long fibers are used for yarns in textile production. Independently of each other, four different peoples began cultivating the cotton plant. For example, clothing made from this natural fiber was found in Mexico that is 7,000 years old. There is also evidence from India showing that cotton has been grown there for over 3,000 years.
Cotton as a mass product
Since the processing of cotton by hand is very time-consuming, it was a luxury good in Europe until the 17th century, as valuable as silk. It was only the invention of industrial spinning machines that made it possible to process this natural fiber in inexpensive mass production from 1764 onwards. The invention of a ginning machine, which is used for the de-seeding of cotton, further promoted cultivation in the Southern States of the USA, and the dark chapter of slave labor reached its greatest extent. Today, cotton is mainly harvested and processed mechanically and with the use of chemicals. Handwork is only used sporadically.
Use of cotton
Nowadays, cotton from clothing and home textiles is indispensable. It accounts for about 75% of all natural fibers used. Additionally, cotton is utilized in the cosmetics industry to produce items such as cotton swabs or pads. Furthermore, it can be found in medical bandages, coffee filters, book covers, or in various types of paper. Since cotton also has a relatively high elasticity, it is used as a reinforcing fiber for so-called natural fiber-reinforced plastics, from which mainly automotive parts are manufactured.
Properties of cotton
In general, the following properties are attributed to cotton:
- Skin-friendly
- Air-permeable
- Boil-proof
- Low allergy potential
- Tear-resistant (even more so when wet)
- Resistant to heat
- High elasticity
- Can absorb up to 63% of its own weight in water
- Dyes well
Advantages and disadvantages of a cotton blanket
Cotton is, in contrast to cashmere or down, a less warming filling for blankets. The user should be aware of this. They can choose between a slightly higher room temperature and a denser, thicker filling with cotton during colder months. A blanket with cotton filling is otherwise very pleasant to handle. The disadvantage of possible pollutant contamination can be offset by paying attention to the manufacturer's indication that the cotton has been grown organically. Additional certificates, such as GOTS for Global Organic Textile Standard, ensure the desired safety that the cotton filling is guaranteed to be free of pollutants. The International Association of Natural Textile Industry IVN based in Stuttgart awards the GOTS quality seal, among other things, for cotton fillings offered on the German market.
Cotton blanket for allergy sufferers
A cotton blanket is also wonderfully suitable for allergy sufferers. Because it is very breathable, it absorbs a lot of moisture and quickly releases it back into the surrounding air. Most blankets are made of 100% cotton, and many manufacturers have also started to purchase and process cotton from organic farming. When cultivating the cotton plant, a distinction is made between three categories:
- GMO Cotton is genetically modified, and pesticides and fertilizers are used in its cultivation.
- Sustainable Cotton is not genetically modified. This type of cotton is grown with lower amounts of pesticides and fertilizers, but is not free from them.
- Organic Cotton is a type of cotton that is grown without the use of genetic engineering or chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Cotton from organic farming contains no harmful substances and is therefore also suitable for allergy sufferers. Cotton blankets can be easily washed at 60 degrees, and usually also at 95 degrees. Cotton from non-organic farming can be easily dried in the dryer, while organic cotton cannot, as no chemical agents are used that would prevent shrinkage. This can reduce and kill the number of dust mites. Cotton from organic farming is biodegradable, which is not the case with synthetic fibers. Thus, the waste problem is eliminated with organic cotton.
Cotton blankets as living room blankets
Cotton blankets are very popular as living room blankets. They can be used in many ways, whether as a cuddly blanket in the living room, as a decorative sofa throw, or as a snuggle blanket for small children. Cotton can be easily dyed, which is reflected in the huge variety of designs of the living room blankets. There are cotton living room blankets in many different colors, patterns, and designs. Bright colors like pink and purple are becoming increasingly popular. Children are also excited about the brightly colored designs of the cotton blankets. This allows for wonderful highlights to be set in the home. Whether as a bedspread in the bedroom, or as a sofa throw in the living room or children's room, beautiful colors, patterns, and motifs are always a good eye-catcher.
Swaddling blankets made of cotton
Baby blankets wrap our little ones, keep them warm, and provide them with security in the stroller, on the changing table, or as a cuddly blanket during snuggling. Due to their versatile uses, they are used almost everywhere around the baby. For this reason, several changing and baby blankets often belong to the baby’s basic equipment. Baby blankets, cuddly blankets, or swaddling blankets are often used synonymously and usually differ only in the fabrics used. Most baby products are made of cotton, virgin wool, or wool fleece. Swaddling blankets are usually light and cuddly warm, so the baby does not get cold and you can easily wrap it up. You can quickly wrap your baby in swaddling blankets when you take it out of the crib. Cuddly blankets or baby blankets can be a bit heavier, as they are often used as a base or for warmth, for example, in the stroller.
Cotton as filling in quilts
Cotton quilts are popular nowadays. They are suitable for people who tend to sweat a lot, as cotton is very absorbent. Synthetic fibers are becoming increasingly popular as filling. The advantage of a synthetic fiber is that it is very easy to care for and also resistant to moisture. Quilts with synthetic fibers are also preferred by people who suffer from allergies. The quilt can be washed at least at 60 degrees, which kills the mites.
Cotton blanket as a cuddly blanket
Beautiful cuddly blankets also look great on any sofa. Cuddly blankets make a TV evening truly a proper TV evening. Overall, only with a cuddly blanket is a home truly a home. Of course, you can also buy your cuddly blankets cheaply and in solid colors at the discount store, but who wants such boring cotton blankets at home? Furthermore, a cuddly blanket should not lose its beauty and softness after the first wash. Additionally, a beautiful cuddly blanket on the armrest of a couch completes the entire living landscape. But not only the adults love their cuddly blanket; the little ones also do not want to part with their cotton blankets and best not spend a minute without them. However, cuddly blankets are not only needed in winter; even in summer, when it gets a bit cooler in the evening during a barbecue on the terrace, a cotton blanket is just right so that the evening doesn't have to end too early.
Cotton blanket and sizes
A cotton blanket is available in different sizes:
- Standard: 135x200 cm
- Comfort: 155x200 cm
The sizes are most suitable for people under 180 cm tall. People over 180 cm tall should choose these measurements for the blankets:
- 135x220 cm
- 155x220 cm
All sizes that deviate from the measurement of 135x200 cm are considered oversized. Although the industry adheres to an outdated standard size of 175 cm, people are statistically getting taller and wider. Some companies have recognized this and have adjusted their size charts accordingly.
For couples who like to sleep under one blanket together, the following sizes are available:
- 200x200 cm smaller than 180 cm
- 200x220 cm larger than 180
- 240x220 cm Comfort size
- 260x220 cm King Size
Use a cotton blanket as a bedspread to protect the bedding
It gets a bit cozier with quilted bedspreads, which are often used as a bed cover to protect the bedding. This type of bedspread is usually made of cotton. This way, you can save the comforter in summer and instead use the bedspread. To bring variety to the bedroom, such a blanket often has two differently designed sides – so you can switch according to your preference thanks to the colors. Whether bought or homemade – the colorful blankets are always an eye-catcher.
The quilt
The word "quilt" is derived from English and means something like "to pad" or "to stitch." This type of blanket originated in China. From there, it spread throughout Europe. The classic quilt consists of three layers of fabric and therefore keeps you particularly warm. Transform your bedroom into a feel-good oasis and let yourself be surprised by the selection of bedspreads in various colors! Whether solid colors or colorful, a cotton throw blanket makes your home cozy and inviting. In addition, you can choose from a variety of solid-colored or patterned blankets, ranging from cotton blankets in subtle colors to particularly colorful models.
