Cultivation of linen
The flax plant requires a maritime climate and is susceptible to frost, so the farmer should sow flax early. Proximity to the coast is optimal, which is why there are only cultivation areas for linen in the north of Germany. There is conventional cultivation or controlled organic cultivation. In conventional cultivation, pesticides and mineral fertilizers are used. In controlled organic cultivation, a change in the traditional cultivation method is completely avoided. Which method is better and which leads to reduced qualities of linen is often up for discussion. Constant contact with water is very important, as otherwise the plant risks drying out. Now the question arises: How is linen produced? The linen plant is pulled out and roasted. After the plant has been separated from the wood and combed, the fibers can be spun into yarn. The final stage of production involves spinning or weaving the fibers into linen fabric, from which linen textiles can then be made. Where can you buy linen? What is linen?
Linen is a fabric woven from natural plant fibers. There is a distinction between half-linen, a blend of cotton and flax fibers, and full linen, which is made from 100 percent flax fibers. Linen has the special property of insulating little heat. For this reason, the material is popular not only for airy summer clothing but also for bedding. Even on warm nights, the material always feels fresh. Its cooling effect makes it easier to fall asleep at higher temperatures and guarantees a relaxed sleep. The fibers of the flax plant are naturally structured and not as soft as other fibers, such as cotton. The rather stiff material is particularly durable and "ages" over time.
Linen care
This means that the material becomes softer over time with repeated washing. The material is resistant and repels dirt and bacteria due to its surface structure. For this reason, you need to wash linen bedding significantly less often than bedding made from synthetic fibers. Pay attention to the washing instructions on the textile and avoid fabric softeners. Linen bedding has a particularly smooth fiber structure. It is therefore perfect for allergy sufferers, as dust and the associated mites cannot accumulate on the surface. Due to its cooling properties, linen bedding is particularly skin-friendly. Linen bedding is somewhat stiffer than we are used to from materials like cotton or microfiber. This means that the fibers gently stimulate our skin while we sleep. This pleasant "massage effect" is hardly noticeable, but it does make a difference during sleep.
Disadvantages of linen
Linen also has some disadvantages:
- Low abrasion resistance, linen is not as durable under mechanical stress
- Linen sheets shrink easily
- Linen sheets wrinkle very easily and are difficult to iron.
- Linen sheets should be slightly damp when ironing
