Down duvet
What advantages does a down comforter have?
Down comforter - Fluffy soft quality from nature
A down comforter is a true natural product and of good quality. Whenever you want it warm and cozy, you best sink into a thick down comforter. Due to their excellent thermal properties, down comforters are favored, although, as many comforter tests confirm, there are significant quality differences. Eiderdown is the most valuable down of all. It comes from the eider duck, which lives in Greenland and Iceland. There, it is collected by hand from the nests. Eiderdown has many barbs, so they cling together intensely. Eiderdown comforters are airy light yet beautifully warm, cozy, snug, and balancing. You neither sweat nor freeze. Duck and goose down insulate, warm, are soft and cuddly – but the down of eider ducks is miles ahead of them. The down of the animals is larger the colder the environment is.
Down comforter - What is actually a down?
Colloquially, many people use the terms down comforter and feather comforter synonymously. However, this is not correct. The two differ significantly from each other. Feathers are the visible outer layer, while down is the invisible underlayer. They also differ in appearance; down looks more like a snowflake. Down lacks the quill and is therefore much lighter compared to feathers. Down is light and simultaneously provides good thermal insulation and moisture regulation. Down can absorb the sweat released and transfer it to the environment. This prevents the feeling of dampness under the blanket. Not all down is the same; there is duck down, goose down, and eider down. These differ significantly in quality. Duck down is the lowest quality, as it is very small and can break more easily. Goose down has good quality, but one should pay attention to the living conditions. A goose that has free range, always fresh water, and good feed is larger and therefore has larger down. Eider down is a true luxury product. Eider ducks are mostly found in Iceland and Greenland. Eider ducks are a protected species that cannot be domesticated and lives exclusively in the wild. Only already shed down may be collected, so only a few tons are available per year. Eider down is eight times more expensive than good goose down.
Down for comforters - Popular filling with a long tradition
Down is the oldest and most popular form of comforter filling. It is particularly suitable for anyone who gets cold quickly. This is because the small hairs on the down feathers trap air very well, which can hold and insulate heat. Another property of down comforters: They absorb moisture from below, that is, the sweat you release while sleeping. This moisture is then directed upwards through the comforter. So with a down comforter, you won't wake up in a sweat. The comforter is so clever that your body can breathe comfortably underneath it. In summer, a down comforter might still be a bit warm. It is soft. It is warm. It is natural. Even for sensitive individuals, the down comforter is suitable because it insulates ideally and regulates moisture. By the way, only comforters that are filled with at least 60% down can be called down comforters. With a lower proportion of down to feathers, it is referred to as a feather bed.
Down comforters – The difference between feathers and down
The difference between a feather and down is already the appearance. The down sits under the actual feather coat and has the task of protecting ducks and geese from moisture and cold. A down has a completely different structure compared to a feather. It does not have a quill but a small core in the center and is much more elastic and also lighter than a feather. Its three-dimensional shape gives it more volume and filling power. Downs are highly elastic. If you squeeze down with your hand and then let go, the downs unfold very quickly back to their original size, again and again. Downs are also extremely stable and robust. Synthetic fibers such as polyester are significantly inferior to down in this regard. Under the microscope, down resembles a snowflake. Downs can absorb 14 times more moisture than a polyester fiber. Downs are capable of absorbing up to 11.6% of their weight in water. No synthetic fiber comes close to such a high value. Polyamide fibers can only absorb 4% and polyester fibers even only 0.8% of their own weight in moisture. They absorb the moisture released by us humans during sleep, including the evaporative heat, and release it back into the room air through the surface of the duvet. This keeps the bed and thus the sleeper dry during sleep. Downs are extremely light. This lightness leads to down comforters being extremely adaptable and cozy. Downs keep you very warm and regulate the heat Larger downs mean more branches and thus more space to store air. If the downs can store more air, they insulate and warm better, are lighter, and have a higher filling power. The so-called eider duck, from which the high-quality eider down comes, has a diameter of a 2-euro coin or even more, as it only occurs in cold Iceland and Greenland. In contrast, duck downs have a diameter of no more than 1.5 cm. Since a lot of air is stored in eider downs, manufacturers need much less material to achieve the same thermal effect compared to goose and duck downs. With eider downs, you can be one hundred percent sure that no animal has suffered here. Eider ducks live wild and cannot be domesticated. Eider ducks use their downs to protect the eggs from the cold. The downs must be painstakingly collected and cleaned, and only a few tons are available per year. This justifies the relatively high price. An eider down comforter costs a good 3000 euros. However, there are also significant quality differences between goose and duck downs. Goose down is larger than duck down, and thus has a higher insulation power. A comforter filled with duck downs is usually heavier than a comforter with goose downs. And since lighter comforters are preferred, the down comforter with goose downs is more popular.
Down comforter - Quality of the cover
It is important that the cover of a down comforter is made from a lightweight, snug, and down-proof fabric. Cotton is best suited for this as the cover of a down comforter. High-quality down comforter covers - also called inlets - have several functions. They must keep the down inside in place, not shift in the bedding, and fit lightly and smoothly against your body to avoid heat bridges.
Down duvet - Care of the down duvet
Down or feather duvets should not be washed too often. A thorough daily airing is usually sufficient. If it is necessary to wash a down duvet, it requires some preparation. Inspect the duvet for tears, holes, or damage. These can tear further during washing, and the down or feathers would be distributed in the washing machine. The result would be a broken washing machine, as the down is so fine that it can also settle in the pump and other parts of the washing machine. And the down duvet would also be ruined. If the down duvet has tears or holes, sew them up with a suitable thread beforehand. The washing machine should have a capacity of more than five kilos; otherwise, the down or feathers would be compressed too much. One to two tennis balls should be added to the wash cycle, which helps to loosen clumps. Choose the gentle wash cycle at 30/40 °C and avoid fabric softener. You can also wash the duvets at 60 °C to kill dust mites, but be aware that the down or feathers may be damaged. Down duvets should be dried in the dryer; air drying takes too long, and mold could form. Here too, a low spin speed and low temperature should be chosen, and drying should be done in several steps. A drying cycle should not last longer than 20 minutes. Between drying cycles, the duvets should be shaken. One to two tennis balls should also be added during drying.

Duvet Test Mattress Test - 30 Days Trial Sleeping
Restful and healthy sleep is important for well-being and to recharge energy. Humans spend almost a third of their lives sleeping. Therefore, the choice of the right mattress is crucial for good, healthy sleep. To assess whether a mattress is suitable for one's sleep type and needs, a few minutes of lying down in the store is by no means sufficient. Especially if the previous mattress was very worn out or did not fit the body and sleep habits particularly well, it can take some time for the body to unlearn its previous protective or incorrect posture and to get used to the new mattress and an orthopedic position. For this reason, Mister Sandman offers you the opportunity for trial sleeping for a full 30 days and nights to thoroughly test your new mattress. This also allows you to test the mattress in your familiar sleeping environment and in conjunction with the bedroom furnishings, as furniture and bedding accessories such as pillows, blankets, toppers, and bed linen have a significant impact on sleep comfort.
