Diabetes Mattress
Which mattress should diabetics use?
Explanation of diabetes for a diabetes mattress and pressure relief
Diabetes mellitus, also known as sugar disease, is a chronic metabolic disease that leads to elevated blood sugar levels. The term sugar disease comes from the fact that untreated diabetics excrete sugar in their urine, which then tastes sweet. Doctors used this in the past to recognize diabetes. However, the medically correct term is diabetes mellitus. Health suffers greatly as a result.
There are 2 types of diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is rather rare:
This type of disease is an autoimmune disease. In this case, the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing β-cells of the pancreas in a reaction known as insulitis. In type 1 diabetes, the missing hormone insulin must be artificially supplied in the form of insulin preparations.
Type 2 Diabetes:
This is a disorder in which insulin is present, but cannot act properly at its target site, the cell membranes. The amount of insulin produced is then no longer sufficient to control blood sugar levels, and type 2 diabetes mellitus becomes manifest. A type 2 diabetic produces much more endogenous insulin than a metabolically healthy person, but due to high insulin resistance, blood sugar levels still rise; later, in some cases, a relative deficiency leads to an absolute insulin deficiency.
Comorbidities of diabetes
There are many comorbidities of diabetes that also need to be treated:
- High blood pressure
- Retinal disease
- Autonomic neuropathy
- Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (disorder of blood circulation, leg pain, exercise-dependent pain up to amputation of extremities)
- In 90% of cases, the occlusive disease occurs in the legs.
- Pain when walking (intermittent claudication), there are 4 stages. From stage 3, pain occurs in the feet and toes at rest, especially when lying down
- Wounds on the lower leg or foot may occur
- Poorly healing wounds occur.
- The foot can break unnoticed, as the patient has an increased pain threshold.
Gestational diabetes
Women who develop diabetes only during pregnancy must take this as seriously as type 1 patients. Gestational diabetes occurs in about 22,000 cases per year. This corresponds to 3.4 percent of pregnancies nationwide in Germany. Thus, gestational diabetes is one of the most common pregnancy complications. Since GDM does not cause any symptoms, it is often overlooked. In the maternity guidelines (mandatory care standard for pregnant women in Germany), GDM is not mentioned. In the maternity record, it appears as complication No. 50. A urine sugar strip test is offered to pregnant women every four weeks. However, this overlooks 90 percent of GDM cases.
Nutrition in Type I Diabetes
Nutrition is an important component in the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Affected individuals can significantly contribute to avoiding blood sugar spikes after meals and improving their values and thus their health with what they consume day by day. With a healthy diet, especially in combination with sufficient exercise, insulin resistance, which underlies the disease, can often improve.
Explanation of pressure ulcers and pressure relief for diabetes mattress
Pressure ulcer is a local damage to the skin and the underlying tissue due to prolonged pressure load, which disrupts the blood circulation of the skin. It mainly affects people with reduced mobility, bedridden individuals, and people who are in wheelchairs. Pressure ulcers are also considered an indicator of care errors. For pressure ulcers, maximum pressure relief is important. This is usually achieved through appropriate mattresses, such as a cold foam mattress. Pressure relief refers to the ability of the mattress to absorb localized pressure. The recovery properties of the mattress must be particularly good. The mattress should return to its original state after loading and pressure relief, thus counteracting pressure ulcers.
Symptoms and the stages of pressure ulcers
A pressure ulcer causes certain changes to the skin. The extent of the changes is reflected in the classification of pressure ulcer grades:
- Pressure Ulcer: Stage 1 (Stage I): Initially, a sharply defined redness appears in a specific area of skin; it persists even when the pressure is relieved. The area may be hardened and warmer than the surrounding area, but the skin is still intact.
- Pressure Ulcer: Stage 2 (Stage II): In stage 2 pressure ulcers, blisters have formed on the skin or the top layer of skin is peeling off. An open wound develops, but it is still superficial.
- Pressure Ulcer: Stage 3 (Stage III): In stage 3 pressure ulcers, the sore extends to the muscle beneath the skin. A deep, open sore is visible. Sometimes there are "pockets" under the healthy skin at the edge of the pressure ulcer that extend from the sore.
- Pressure Ulcer: Stage 4 (Stage IV): In a stage IV pressure ulcer, one sees exposed bones. The skin, muscles, bones, and other structures such as joints or tendons are destroyed.
At certain body points, pressure can particularly affect the tissue, making it easier for a pressure ulcer to develop. This includes areas where bony prominences are located directly under the skin and little fat or muscle tissue cushions the bones.
Types of mattresses and items for pressure ulcers and diabetes mattresses and pressure relief
The pressure ulcer mattress has been specifically developed to protect against pressure sores that can occur when the body remains lying in one position for an extended period. Pressure points develop on the body that can quickly turn into a sore, causing significant pain. To prevent this from happening, the pressure ulcer mattress, which we present to you here in various designs, offers assistance and preventive protection. A pressure ulcer mattress can also be used as a dementia mattress. The item can be purchased online.
Foam mattresses as diabetes mattresses
By using a soft foam (both "normal" and viscoelastic foams are used), the patient sinks into the mattress. By increasing the contact area, the pressure decreases. Viscoelastic foams become soft when heated and conform even more closely to the body geometry than other foams. It should be noted that deep sinking distributes pressure well, but significantly reduces the patient's own movements. Therefore, the chosen mattress should provide good pressure relief while only minimally restricting the patient's own movements. Some mattresses have different foams with adapted properties for the head, sacral (pelvic), and foot areas. However, the application frame is limited to the lightest redness and prophylaxis.
Gel mattress as a diabetes mattress
These are primarily used in the operating room and less on wards. They are filled with viscous gel. Gel mats represent the classic perioperative aids. Additionally, gel mats can be heated to prevent the patient from cooling down. Furthermore, there are other aids made from gel materials (seat cushions, etc.).
