  • Pressure Ulcer: Stage 3 (Stage III): In stage 3 pressure ulcers, the sore extends to the muscle beneath the skin. A deep, open sore is visible. Sometimes there are "pockets" under the healthy skin at the edge of the pressure ulcer that extend from the sore.
  • Pressure Ulcer: Stage 4 (Stage IV): In a stage IV pressure ulcer, one sees exposed bones. The skin, muscles, bones, and other structures such as joints or tendons are destroyed.

At certain body points, pressure can particularly affect the tissue, making it easier for a pressure ulcer to develop. This includes areas where bony prominences are located directly under the skin and little fat or muscle tissue cushions the bones.
