What properties does a feather duvet have?
What should be considered when buying feather beds?
Feather beds filled with down and feathers are still very popular. Every night, the body releases moisture. The feather bed has the ability to absorb this released liquid. In the morning, when the feather duvet and pillow are well aired, the moisture escapes again. Those who slip under their feather bed in the evening do not have to freeze. With the classic feather beds from grandmother's times, you can shake the filling exactly where you want it to be particularly cozy. Of course, everyone has different warmth needs, but when it's crisp and cold outside, it should be warm and cozy in bed. In winter, feather beds are a very good choice, and anyone sleeping in a cold bedroom will find the right cover in a feather bed.
What should be considered when buying feather beds?
When the decision for a down comforter has been made, there are a few things to consider when purchasing. The Mister Sandman guide for mattresses provides the best tips for buying: It is important that the down and feathers are new and not sourced from live plucking. However, for sleeping with a down comforter to become a consistently pleasant endeavor, owners should pay attention to comprehensive care. Since the down itself is very sensitive, this care affects both the sleep quality and the durability of the comforter. With a little know-how, it is, however, easy to be happy with your own down comforter for many years.
Down comforter: The quality of the cover
When it comes to down bedding fabric, it is extremely important to look at the cover. This should be made from a light and smooth, down-proof fabric. Cotton fabric is usually used for production, but there are also down comforters made from silk. If you are dealing with the topic of down bedding fabric, you will hardly be able to avoid the term "ticking." Ticking means dividing the comforter into small areas. The reason for this is that the down should not be able to accumulate at the ends of the comforter, as it is supposed to provide warmth everywhere! In down bedding fabric, no fabric is like the other! The so-called "inlets" and "filling" are very special, high-quality fabrics with high standards. The fabric should also perfectly encase the finest feathers and down. Their quills should not be able to poke through in any case! Also, the body moisture absorbed by the down and feathers should be able to be transferred. For this reason, the down bedding fabric must be particularly breathable.
Feather comforter - The balloon bed
With these comforters, the separation is eliminated; the feathers are filled in a large permeable covering. A comforter divided into individual zones is usually filled with less filling material because the feathers and down can be directed more precisely to their "destinations." As a result, such comforters are generally lighter than comparable balloon beds. Balloon beds typically also use a mixture of feathers and down, where the feather content should not be too low. Goose feathers have curved quills, which in this way create a lot of volume. However, goose feathers are not as soft as down and are much heavier. As a result, these comforters are usually relatively heavy and often not exactly cuddly soft in terms of lying comfort. Another argument for this comforter is its easy cleanability. In the past, it was common practice to have feather beds refurbished. The cover, known as the "Einschütte," is opened, and the contents are removed. Then the feathers and down are dusted, washed, and if necessary, old broken material is sorted out and replaced with new material. Afterwards, the now freshly washed filling can be refilled into the cover, which is usually also washed. Finally, it is sewn shut, and the balloon bed is freshly washed and like new. With the quilted comforter, this is an expensive, often pointless endeavor.
Care of the feather duvet
Down or feather duvets should not be washed too often. The feathers and down in the beds are sensitive and become brittle with too frequent washing, which affects the quality of the feather duvet. As a rule of thumb, duvets can be washed in the washing machine every 3 – 4 years and pillows every 1 – 2 years. A thorough daily airing is usually sufficient. If it is necessary to wash a down duvet, it requires some preparation. Inspect the duvet for tears, holes, or damage. These can tear further during washing, and the down or feathers would be distributed in the washing machine. The result would be a broken washing machine, as the down is so fine that it can also accumulate in the pump and other parts of the washing machine. And the down duvet would also be ruined. If the down duvet has tears or holes, sew them up with a suitable thread beforehand. The washing machine should have a capacity of more than five kilos; otherwise, the down or feathers would be compressed too much. One to two tennis balls should be added to the wash cycle, which helps to loosen clumps. Choose the gentle wash cycle at 30/40 °C. Fabric softener should not be used with feathers and down, as it coats the feather or down and causes them to stick together. This results in a loss of its “loftiness.” The inside of the pillow or duvet clumps together and is no longer as light and fluffy. You can also wash the duvets at 60 °C to kill dust mites, but be aware that the down or feathers may be damaged in the process.
Down comforter drying
Down comforters should be dried in the dryer; air drying takes too long, and mold could develop. Here too, a low spin speed and low temperature should be chosen, and the drying should be done in several steps. A drying cycle should not last longer than 20 minutes. Between drying cycles, the comforters should be shaken. One should also add one or two tennis balls while drying. When purchasing a down comforter, it is possible to choose from different heat levels. Many people use two variants by opting for a summer comforter and a winter comforter. In this case, however, it is important that the unused comforter can be stored safely. Those who choose a comforter that can be used year-round should select a versatile model.
Repairing the down comforter
With every down comforter, there comes a time when the ends of the small feathers poke through the cover fabric. A common mistake is pulling out the down, as this creates a hole in the cover. It is better to cut the small feather with household scissors and gently push the small protrusion back into the comforter. Afterwards, the treated area should be smoothed over so that the fibers close again. With good care, high-quality comforters can last up to ten years. While comforters were refilled and reused after this time a few years ago, most people today opt for a complete replacement.
How often should one change the bedding for down comforters?
We lose up to 1 liter of fluid per night through sweating - therefore, you should change sheets and covers every one to two weeks. By the way: pajamas are hygienic because they absorb a large part of the sweat. Additionally, the layer of air between the skin and the pajamas acts as thermal insulation.
Storage of feather beds
Feather beds should not be stored in a plastic bag. Due to temperature fluctuations, for example from direct sunlight, condensation (sweat) could form in the plastic packaging. This moisture can promote the formation of mold spots and mildew and ultimately lead to the complete destruction of the bedding. Therefore, store bedding loosely in breathable packaging. This should be tight enough to protect the contents from dirt and potential pests. Additionally, the room should not be subject to extreme temperature fluctuations and should have a dry climate.
