When choosing a topper, the following criteria should be considered in addition to the quality of the mattress pad:

  • Density of the toppers

The higher the density, the better the quality of the pad.

  • Height of the pad

Most toppers as mattress pads have a height between 4cm and 10cm. The height that is most popular is usually between 4cm and 7cm.

  • Hardness level

With a pad in the form of a topper, there is usually not a large selection of hardness levels. Toppers are supposed to make mattresses softer; this type of pad is usually soft. What is the difference between a topper and an underbed?

Underbeds, on the other hand, are mainly intended to influence the sleep climate (warmer, cooler, drier, etc.). Therefore, underbeds often also have different fillings, e.g.:

Synthetic latex for latex mattress toppers, pillows, and toppers is made, unlike natural latex for mattress toppers, pillows, and toppers, from petrochemical substances. Latex is produced from crude oil components, while natural latex is derived from natural raw materials. Latex mattress toppers and mattresses made from latex have the disadvantage that when unpacking the new product, there is usually an unpleasant chemical smell coming from the latex mattress toppers and latex mattresses. The smell of the latex items is normally health-safe and dissipates after a few days.

  • Latex production for toppers, pillows, mattress pads, and mattresses using the Talalay process

The Dunlop process in latex production

The Dunlop process is the standard process in the industrial production of latex for latex mattress pads and latex mattresses.

  • a gelling agent is added to the latex material in the Dunlop process
  • then the latex is foamed
  • Latex increases its volume tenfold in this process
  • The latex mass is then poured into a mold
  • The latex is heated in the mold and cured
  • Subsequently, the latex is washed and dried

The Talalay process in latex production

The Talalay process is significantly more complex than the Dunlop process in the production of latex for latex mattress pads, toppers, and mattresses. Talalay latex represents the highest quality of latex in pillows, mattress pads, and mattresses. Accordingly, toppers, mattress pads, and mattresses with a filling material made of Talalay latex are more expensive than bedding with a "simple" latex filling.

  • In the Talalay process, latex is foamed and increased to 12 times its volume
  • The latex is poured into a mold
  • Subsequently, the latex is shock-frozen
  • Subsequently, the latex is heated (vulcanized)
