Microfiber blanket

What is the advantage of a microfiber blanket?

What is a microfiber blanket?

Microfiber is a man-made fiber. It consists of polyester and silk-like polyamide, as well as nylon and acrylic. Microfibers are three times finer than cotton and twice as fine as silk, which is considered the thinnest natural fiber. A hair is a hundred times thicker than a microfiber. Microfiber has five times the absorbency of cotton, and the fabric also has high breathability. The term microfiber describes the collection of very thin and particularly fine fibers. Compared to microfibers, silk fibers, for example, are twice as strong, cotton fibers are three to four times as strong, and human hair is about a hundred times as strong. Microfiber is usually made from polyester, polyacrylic, or polyamide. Hence, the term "chemical fibers" originates.

Positive properties of the microfiber blanket

The microfiber cuddle blanket is characterized by many positive properties. Due to the fact that it is a synthetic fiber, the microfiber cuddle blanket is very dirt-resistant. If the blanket does get dirty or has stains, it is very easy to wash. The microfiber cuddle blanket dries within a few hours after washing, so it can be quickly used again. A positive aspect of this blanket regarding care and wash resistance is that the microfiber proves to be very shape-retaining. Even after many washes, the blanket remains perfectly in shape and does not warp, as can be expected from some other throws.

No lint formation with the microfiber blanket

In contrast to the fleece blanket, for example, the microfiber blanket has another advantage, as it does not tend to form lint on the surface, which fleece unfortunately often exhibits after a few washes or intensive use. Both in use and in care, the microfiber cuddle blanket is very pleasant, being shape-retaining and dirt-repellent. Even difficult stains like wine do not bother the microfiber.

Properties of a microfiber blanket

In terms of skin feel, microfiber is pleasant, as it is extremely soft. The reason for this lies in the fiber structure of the microfiber. The microfiber or its individual threads have only half the thickness of silk, making this synthetic material significantly softer than silk. It is precisely these fine threads that are also the reason why microfiber hardly tends to form lint. It creates such a smooth surface that these unpleasant fabric knots are generally absent. Microfiber is available in so many colors and color combinations that it fits effortlessly into any home.

The popularity of the microfiber blanket

In terms of popularity, the cuddly blanket is ranked just as high as bed linen and other home textiles made from this equally easy-care and pleasant material. Although individual manufacturers have their own product names for microfiber products, all microfiber products share the same very good and pleasant properties.

Microfiber blankets as a recycling product

Plastic bottles are made from the plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The raw material polyester is derived from oil, a resource that is becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. Therefore, clothing/bed linen is also made from plastic bottles that can no longer be refilled. The bottles are washed, sorted, and processed into so-called PET flakes – a form that is cheaper for transport. The resulting secondary raw material is ground and heated. Then, the melted plastic is drawn into threads using the injection nozzle process, which are then woven into fibers. The resulting material is processed, for example, into synthetic fur, better known by the English name "fleece," in German: Flausch. However, other textiles can also be produced from the plastic flakes that have a high polyamide and low cotton content.

Polyester in Sportswear

Polyester fibers are particularly suitable for sportswear because they can transport moisture away from the body well. The synthetic fabric polyester is also obtained from PET bottles, among other things. It is mostly used as an insulating surface material or as a component in blended fabrics. Polyester is extremely tear-resistant and water-repellent. However, polyester itself does not provide warmth at all, only in combination with other fabrics. So when it's freezing outside, pure polyester clothing should stay in the closet!

Microfiber and the Environment

Microfiber is made from a recycled material, but it is not very environmentally friendly. With every wash, micro-particles are released, which enter the sea unfiltered. Even sewage treatment plants cannot filter out these micro-particles. On the other hand, the production is also not really environmentally friendly. In Germany, only 20% of PET bottles are recycled. The rest is exported and processed into textiles in other countries. Germany then imports this goods back at a high cost. So if you care about the environment, you are better off with natural fibers.

Advantages and disadvantages of a microfiber blanket

A microfiber blanket is extremely breathable and very absorbent. It is particularly suitable for sleepers who produce a lot of sweat during sleep. Most microfiber blankets are washable at 60 degrees, which is important, as otherwise bacteria or mites cannot be killed. So you should pay attention to this when purchasing. Since microfiber is impermeable to mites, it is particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. The microfiber blanket has few disadvantages, one of which is that it can become statically charged. This can cause an uncomfortable feeling while sleeping. Due to the smooth surface of the microfiber blanket, it cools in summer, and in winter it keeps you cozy warm. The microfiber blanket is also very popular as a cuddly blanket. Because it is so light, it fits particularly well to the body. One disadvantage can also be that microfiber bed sheets can sometimes feel slippery. If you don't like that, you should at least switch to cotton or terry for the bed sheet.

Care instructions for microfiber blanket

Please always pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions, some microfiber blankets are not washable at 60 degrees. Do not use fabric softener, as it would clog the microfiber. It is also not recommended to put the microfiber blanket in the dryer, as the microfiber can become statically charged. However, this is not necessary, as microfiber dries very quickly.

Microfiber blanket as a cuddly blanket

Beautiful cuddly blankets also look great on any sofa. Cuddly blankets turn a movie night into a real movie night. Overall, only with a cuddly blanket is a home truly a home. Of course, you can also buy your cuddly blankets cheaply and in solid colors at discount stores, but who would want such boring microfiber blankets at home? Furthermore, a cuddly blanket should not lose its beauty and softness after the first wash. Additionally, a beautiful cuddly blanket on the armrest of a couch completes the entire living landscape. But not only adults love their cuddly blankets; even the little ones don't want to part with their microfiber blankets and prefer not to spend a minute without them. However, cuddly blankets are not only needed in winter; even in summer, when it gets a bit cooler in the evening during a barbecue on the terrace, a microfiber blanket is just right so that the evening doesn't have to end too early.

Microfiber blanket as a living blanket

People have always searched for creative solutions to keep warm while sleeping, but also to artistically beautify their living space. What began with furs and pelts continued with the first textile processing when people settled down, cultivated flax, and raised sheep. Nevertheless, blankets for living purposes were long reserved for the upper class as mere decoration. Today, those who visit castles and palaces often marvel at the artistically carved canopy beds with blankets, but this luxury in the bedroom was solely reserved for the head of the household.

The patchwork technique

Emigrants brought the patchwork technique from the English-speaking world to America, where it experienced a boom that continues to this day. Meanwhile, following the American model, handmade patchwork blankets are also being displayed in museums and exhibitions in Europe. When living space was scarce in Germany after World War II, the living blankets experienced a new renaissance, as in multifunctional single-room apartments, the bed was converted into a sofa during the day with the decorative blanket. Since then, the living blanket has become an integral part of our living culture and will remain so for a long time due to its numerous good properties.
