According to the Textile Labelling Act, virgin wool is the hair obtained from a living animal and processed for the first time. "Pure wool" may also contain recycled shoddy wool. Shoddy wool is a reused product obtained from old textiles, the use of which is legally prohibited in the labeling "virgin wool". Australia is the largest exporter of sheep virgin wool. In addition, New Zealand and Argentina are also major wool-producing countries. Virgin wool is a high-quality, renewable raw material from nature that has been used for clothing and bedding for centuries. It has excellent temperature-regulating properties, is breathable, and keeps you wonderfully warm. The natural fibers are resistant to dirt due to their residual fat content and neutralize body sweat. At the same time, the fabric can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling damp. This is why a virgin wool blanket provides a pleasant, natural sleeping climate, for example on a comfortable mattress.

Merino - shearing wool blanket

This natural fiber can store up to 30% of its own weight in moisture, regulates climate, and is dirt-repellent. The functional properties result from the structure of the merino fibers – fine, soft, highly crimped, scaly, elastic. It insulates well, does not scratch the skin, transports moisture, does not smell, and retains its shape or hardly wrinkles. (Merino) wool is flame resistant compared to other fibers. Merino wool does not become electrostatically charged like synthetic materials. There is a distinction between lambswool (first shearing after 6 months), yearling wool (shearing after 12 months), and adult wool (shearing occurs once a year). Merino shearing wool is characterized by its fineness and high crimp – both properties that a really good blanket needs. The finer the hair and the stronger the crimp, the higher the moisture absorption capacity and the better the insulation value. The result is optimal climate regulation. Due to the special fiber structure, merino wool has self-cleaning properties. The wool rarely needs to be washed, as it does not absorb dirt particles. Merino clothing can usually be washed in the washing machine at 40 degrees Celsius. However, bleach and fabric softeners should be avoided. Before washing, all zippers on the garment should generally be closed. The wool can go in the dryer at low temperature. However, since merino wool dries very quickly, it is recommended to air dry it. Pay attention to the care labels provided by the manufacturer on your merino wool products.

Alpaca shear wool blanket

Alpaca is a hump-less camel species from South America, originating from the Andean highlands at over 4000 meters. The climatic conditions in this region are very extreme, so it is relatively warm during the day in the sun at about 20 degrees Celsius, but at night it is icy cold down to about -25 degrees Celsius. To withstand temperature fluctuations of about 50 degrees, these animals have a particularly warm and resilient coat. The alpaca fleece is something special, as it is the only hair that is hollow inside, allowing it to create this temperature balance. These outstanding properties make alpaca hair the ideal fiber for the whole year - summer and winter. There are about 2 million animals worldwide that are sheared annually.

Care instructions for alpaca sheared wool blanket

Alpaca – Sheared wool blankets should preferably not be washed, as they have a self-cleaning effect. The contained protein neutralizes sweat and unpleasant odors. Regular airing in fresh air is sufficient. If cleaning is necessary, the blanket can be washed at 30 degrees with the wool program. It is best to use a wool detergent and no fabric softener. The spin cycle should be reduced to a maximum of 600 revolutions. The blanket must not go in the dryer.

Lambswool blanket

Lambswool or lambswool is the wool sheared from living animals, specifically from young sheep or lambs. The wool is simply shaved off the animals. The lambs must not be older than six months and must not have been sheared before. Lambswool is very soft and cuddly, making it a wonderful natural product. Lambswool can absorb up to 33% of its own weight in moisture and still feels dry. Despite its high absorbency, water from the outside hardly penetrates the inner fiber of the wool in droplet form. It is effectively repelled by the natural wool grease. Only water vapor is absorbed by the hair and released again. This means that moisture is conducted through, while rain and dirt are repelled.

Negative Properties of Sheep Wool

Untreated sheep wool tends to pill/felt (pilling), which can be significantly reduced through special treatments such as anti-pilling equipment or processing quality. Some people find wool clothing to be scratchy, and this can also be significantly reduced through special treatment of the wool. For the designation "sheep wool", the sheep wool content must be at 99.7%. This is stipulated by the Textile Labelling Regulation. Blankets made from sheep's wool can feel heavy and felt if washed too frequently.

The sizes are most suitable for people under 180 cm tall. People over 180 cm tall should choose these measurements for the blankets:

All sizes that deviate from the measurement of 135x200 cm are considered oversized. Although the industry adheres to an outdated standard size of 175 cm, people are statistically getting taller and wider. Some companies have recognized this and have adjusted their size charts accordingly.
