Textiles Trust
What is textile trust?
Textile trust: What does the certification Oeko-Tex Standard 100 stand for?
Year after year, the demand from consumers for reliable information on the topic of quality seals and certifications is growing. We want to explain why: Year after year, many consumers wonder what certain certifications mean and which ones they can trust. There are a number of textile certifications that are subject to specific testing criteria. The use of eco-labels, organic labels, and natural labels in the label names often leads to criticism. The use of eco, organic, or natural in the name does not necessarily provide insights into the awarding criteria. In the eco-textile sector (products made from natural fibers), there are hardly any uniform awarding criteria for the use of organic labels. In this article, we explain why this is the case: More and more consumers in Germany (but also worldwide) are asking questions about contaminant levels in everyday consumer goods:
- Are products produced in Germany and tested for harmful substances as well as the textile material or materials used safe?
- Are items and goods with an "organic" certification or an "organic" seal fundamentally better than goods with other seals or labels?
- What is being checked and what type of certification plus what type of seal can one trust?
For this reason, an independent textile label was created, which clearly states that these textiles comply with the Oeko Tex (Öko-Tex) standard (e.g., clothing textiles, bedding textiles, etc.). For this reason, the Oeko Tex Standard 100 label was introduced. However, there is not only the label Oeko Tex Standard 100 (also written as Öko-Tex), but also other labels that will be presented in this article.
Textiles Trust: What is Oeko-Tex (Oeko-Tex® or Öko Tex)?
Textiles Öko-Tex is a testing and certification system that examines products in the textile sector for harmful substances. The label Textiles Trust - Tested for Harmful Substances is also a label or seal for textiles that meet the strict requirements of the globally recognized Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 (Öko Tex or Öko-Tex) certification system and establishes the quality of products. This community tests independently of industry and companies. The international community for research plus the community for testing in the field of textile ecology. This research community as well as the testing community is based in Zurich and is the publisher of the Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 certification. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Öko Tex or textiles eÖko-Tex) includes the testing of company products for toxins, odors, and emissions of textile goods in compliance with globally recognized testing criteria and information, which upon passing the test receive the label. The testing community and the research community make an important contribution to the textile industry. They grant certifications tested for harmful substances in textile production based on very strict criteria and adherence to the criteria safety standards for consumers.
What does a test of textile goods at Oeko-Tex look like? from?
The testing of textile information for toxins is conducted according to strict criteria under the Oeko-Tex Standard (Oeko-Tex®, Öko Tex or Öko-Tex) at one of the member institutes for community testing or community research. The tests include about 100 testing parameters carried out by the community testing/community research. The examination also includes simulation procedures. In these procedures, every possible route of toxin entry into the human body is considered (through skin, respiratory tract). Only after that can a textile be awarded the pollutant-tested Oeko Tex.
What category classes are classified according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Oeko-Tex® Standard)?
In principle, goods and textiles from the fabric section to finished clothing, that is, raw textiles, intermediate, and end products at all processing stages can receive the tested pollutant label (product label) or seal Textiles Vertrauen - Tested Pollutant Textiles from the community for testing or the community for research. For textiles and goods to receive the label (product label) Textiles Vertrauen - Tested Pollutant Textiles in trade, the textiles must meet the requirements of the Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex (Oeko-Tex® Standard 100). The textiles are classified into four product classes with Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 (Oeko Tex Standard, Öko-Tex or Öko Tex written).
- Textile products for Oeko Tex Standard, Class I: textile goods plus toys for babies and small children (Product class 1)
- Textile products for Oeko Tex Standard, Class II: Textile products that are in direct skin contact with a large part of their surface (Product class 2)
- Textile products for Oeko Tex Standard, Class III: textile products that only have a small part of their surface in skin contact
- Textile products for Oeko Tex Standard, Class IV: Equipment materials for decorative purposes (hardly skin contact), but also textile wall and floor coverings
Stricter Oeko-Tex criteria for baby products and children's products
Baby products with intense skin contact (especially on textiles) must meet higher requirements for testing limit values for textiles and other textiles, compared to a type of textile product that hardly comes into contact with the skin. Only then can these textile certifications be granted. This is established by the community of research and the community of testing. The materials used in production, such as the textile fabrics used, must meet certain standards during production.
What are the requirements for an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Oeko-Tex®) Certification?
Oeko-Tex has developed test criteria for certification and established pollutant-tested limits for textile goods that partly go well beyond national and international guidelines. Companies and manufacturers of various brands receive certification for textile articles and goods according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Oekotex or Oeko-Tex®) while adhering to strict criteria. The Oeko Tex (also written Öko Tex) must meet the requirements in every respect, depending on the offers.
What limit values are tested according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100?
In principle, the Oeko-Tex Standard (also known as Oeko-Tex® Standard) for tested harmful substances requires stricter limits to be adhered to by the manufacturer, depending on the type of skin contact with the product. The tested harmful substance values that are checked for safety by Oeko-Tex® Standard include, among other things, the following information:
- Detection of formaldehyde substances, heavy metal substances, and pesticides in the material
- PCP, phthalate substances, organic tin compounds in the material
- Carcinogenic substances and allergenic dyes (azo dyes) must not be present in the materials
- Flame retardants must not be present in the materials
What seals does Oeko-Tex award (Oeko-Tex®)?
Oeko-Tex (Oeko-Tex®, Öko-Oeko-Tex) awards various certified seals in addition to the seal Textiles Trust, which include further testing criteria depending on the type, in addition to the examination for toxins:
- STeP by Oeko-Tex® (Textile certificate)
- Made in Green by Oeko-Tex® (Green-Oeko-Tex-textile certificates)
- Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® (Eco-Oeko-Tex-textile certificates)
- Detox to Zero by Oeko-Tex® (Textile certificates)
- Leather Standard by Oeko-Tex® (Textile certificates)
- MySTeP by Oeko-Tex® (Öko-Tex)
The Made in Green label (product label) from Oeko-Tex (Öko-Tex)
The pollutant-tested label Made in Green by Oeko-Tex (Oekotex or Öko-Tex written for the product label) for example includes articles and semi-finished products from all stages of the textile chain. With the Green by Oeko-Tex (Öko-Tex) seal, for example, clothing can be labeled worldwide. Worldwide means that it is recognized not only in Europe but actually worldwide in America, Africa, Australia, and Asia. The tests by Oeko-Tex, Oeko-Tex® or Oekotex (Öko-Tex) for the Made in Green by Oeko-Tex® (Öko-Tex) seal include not only the toxins. Environmentally friendly-eco as well as eco-sustainable processes and Green-Eco-Standard-s plus Green-Eco-working conditions are part of the Eco Passport examination. The sustainable seal Made in Green by Oeko-Tex (Öko-Tex) thus stands for sustainably produced eco-friendly textile products that have been tested for toxins and for which pollutant-tested offers exist. It is used for, e.g., eco-sustainably produced eco-cotton or eco-sustainable clothing made from sustainably produced eco-cotton that meets the Green-Standards for Eco Passport by Öko-Tex .
What is the Ökotex Eco Passport?
The Eco Passport is also like the Ökotex a certification program that determines which chemicals are present in textile products to what extent and checks for textile sustainability in textiles. Eco Passport is a program that is available in two stages to conduct the eco-textile testing.
- Level 1: Textile testing system and textile screening to check the most well-known list of harmful substances and to take textile samples
- Level 2: Analytical-textile procedure, which is carried out in member institutes at Ökotex
The Eco Passport label (i.e., eco-sustainable textile products) can only be awarded when the textile requirements in both eco-processes have been met.
How good is an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification?
An addition to the Textile Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate is the Oeko-Tex Standard 1000. This certificate evaluates the category of ecological environmental friendliness and the category of production conditions in production facilities. With the Oeko-Tex Standard 100plus, textile products are labeled that are nearly free of harmful substances and produced in an environmentally friendly (eco) and socially acceptable manner:
- Oeko-Tex (Oeko-Tex® or Oekotex) tested for harmful substances and certified textile articles and goods are tested for harmful substances. Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (Oeko-Tex® or Oekotex) certified articles are suitable for children (including infants) and provide guidance for the customer
- Regardless of whether the textile goods were produced domestically or abroad, the Oeko-Tex testing criteria are uniform worldwide
- A prerequisite for textile certification according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is that all components of a product meet the testing criteria
- Companies and manufacturers must sign a declaration of commitment and conformity (Compliance with quality assurance measures)
