The warranty of a mattress reveals something about the lifespan of the product. During the warranty period, an exchange is possible after the occurrence of specified criteria. Since a person sleeps an average of 8 hours, the product should have high quality to ensure long-lasting enjoyment. What are the differences between revocation, guarantee, and warranty?

Price guarantee, quality guarantee, satisfaction guarantee, durability guarantee. Many mattress manufacturers and retailers offer their customers when purchasing a mattress warranty services. The content of these warranty services can, as the names already suggest, vary greatly. This is mainly because warranty services are an optional additional service from the manufacturers and can therefore differ significantly in content and scope depending on the retailer. Manufacturer warranties for a mattress particularly differ in the warranty period and in the definition of when exactly a warranty claim can be made. Consumers often confuse the terms warranty and guarantee or do not distinguish between the two terms warranty and guarantee at all when purchasing a mattress. The legal provisions that regulate a complaint, the right of return, or a warranty claim apply differently depending on the case.

Can you simply return a new mattress if you don't like it?

You have purchased a new mattress and after the purchase, you realize that it may not be the right model after all. In this case, the right of withdrawal initially applies. According to legal regulations, goods purchased outside of business premises, such as in online retail, can be returned within two weeks without giving any reasons (distance selling contracts). This right does not exist when purchasing a mattress in a retail store. There, unless otherwise agreed, you must rely solely on the goodwill of the seller. If you exercise your right of withdrawal, the item should not show any defects caused by yourself. The mattress should therefore arrive undamaged at the manufacturer. The customer can return the item to the retailer within 2 weeks. The same applies, of course, to other bedding products, such as slatted frames, mattress covers, and pillows.

Extended right of return

Many retailers and manufacturers that sell mattresses, pillows, slatted frames, and other products online also offer their customers an extended right of withdrawal. This means that the customer is granted a longer time period for returning the product. Manufacturers are not obligated to do this, but they offer this service as an additional service to their customers. Mattress manufacturers who sell their goods online often grant their customers an extended return right.

Warranty

A mattress can also be returned for other reasons, for example, if the delivered goods have defects. Here, the statutory liability for defects or warranty applies. The manufacturer must ensure that the goods are free from defects at the time of delivery to the buyer. If a newly purchased mattress has defects upon delivery, the customer has the right to request the retailer or manufacturer to repair or provide a replacement for the mattress. The warranty is valid for two years and can be claimed by the customer within these two years. The processing of a warranty case must not incur any costs for the buyer. This means that shipping, i.e., the shipping costs, must be borne by the retailer or manufacturer.

Warranty and guarantee are not the same

Often, the warranty and the claims arising from it are confused with a guarantee claim:

• Warranty: if there are defects at the time of sale of an item, there is an obligation for the seller/dealer/manufacturer to remedy these defects. The warranty begins from the date of purchase.

• Guarantee: a guarantee is a voluntary additional service from the seller/retailer/manufacturer that goes beyond the legal standard. The guarantee period begins from the date of purchase.

When does the warranty apply?

Unlike the warranty, which is valid for 2 years, the guarantee period can extend over a significantly longer period. For used goods, the warranty can be shortened to one year. In general, it should be noted regarding the warranty for a mattress that:

• the mattress must already show damage at the time of delivery to the buyer
• in the first half year, it is presumed that the goods were already defective at the time of delivery
• after the 6 months, the burden of proof is reversed and the buyer must now prove that defects were already present at the time of delivery,

Warranty

Beyond the warranty, retailers can offer their customers a guarantee. A guarantee in this case is a voluntarily offered liability on the part of the seller that goes beyond the legally usual provisions. The retailer "guarantees" the functionality of a product during a certain guarantee period, for example. However, guarantee services do not have to relate to the entire product; only certain components of the products may be meant. In the case of mattresses , the guarantee usually covers the mattress cores. Often, the covers are excluded from the guarantee. Because guarantees, unlike warranties, are a voluntary service, conditions may be set by the manufacturers in this case. For example, shipping does not have to be covered by the manufacturer. A guarantee case does not exist if the customer has caused damage or defects to the goods themselves or has previously attempted to repair the goods themselves. 

Warranty on bedding

Since the warranty is a voluntary service of the manufacturers, there are significant differences between individual retailers regarding the scope of the warranty or the warranty period.

• For a mattress, warranty claims are granted with proper use and under consideration of care instructions. The warranty often refers to material and production defects of the mattress core. Other components of the mattress, such as the mattress covers, may be excluded from the warranty
• For slatted frames, the warranty usually only applies to material and production defects
• For pillows and top bedding, a warranty on material and production defects is often granted
• For bed linen, a warranty on material and production defects is usually granted
