What is a foam mattress pad?

What is foam?

Foam is an artificial material made by foaming various plastics. Foams are used for the production of mattresses, toppers/mattress pads, and other bedding items. Foams can be divided into different categories:

  • Integral foam

When it comes to foams, one should always ensure that the products and items are tested for harmful substances.

What is PUR foam?

For foam mattresses, foam pillows, and foam mattress pads, polyether foams are used. PUR foam has good point elasticity, durability, and thermal insulation, making it particularly suitable for products like foam mattresses, foam pillows, or a foam mattress pad (mattress topper). However, not all foam is the same; it can be further divided into other types of foam:

  • Visco foam for mattresses, toppers, a mattress pad

Quality feature density

The quality of foam in mattresses, a topper, or a mattress pad is related, among other things, to the density height. In principle, it applies: The higher the density, the higher the quality of the foam. The cold foam in cold foam mattresses, a cold foam topper, or a cold foam mattress pad is considered high quality from a density of 40. When looking for a new mattress, it is advisable not only to pay attention to the density height. The density indicates the proportion of raw material per m³. This means that with a density of 40, 40kg of raw material were used for 1m³ in the mattress, the topper, or the mattress pad. Density is abbreviated as RG.

Pay attention to harmful substance contamination in foam

The material used for a foam mattress pad, a foam pillow, or mattresses made of foam should be as free from harmful substances as possible, i.e. it should be Oeko-Tex certified. For optimal sleeping comfort, it is ideal to choose a foam mattress, mattress pad, or a foam topper that consists of a combination of different types of foam. Especially with foam mattresses or a foam mattress pad, the individual properties of the different types of foam can be combined in various products:

  • Cold foam for mattresses, toppers, mattress pads

Material combinations in bedding

A combination of foam, e.g. cold foam, visco or gel foam with other materials, such as latex, is also possible. Latex mattresses often consist not only of latex but are combined with foam, such as cold foam, visco or gel foam, to make the mattress softer. Which mattress or which foam mattress topper is the right one cannot be answered universally. Whether a foam mattress, a foam topper, or a foam mattress pad is the right choice depends on individual sleeping habits and physical characteristics.

Test mattresses before purchase

To find out whether a mattress, a topper, or a foam mattress topper fits individually, it is important to test the products. Items such as mattresses should not only be tested briefly in the furniture store. Through trial sleeping over a longer period, it can be more reliably determined whether the mattress model, whether made of cold foam, visco, or another foam, fits individually and allows for restful sleep.

What properties does visco foam have in a mattress topper?

Visco foam is, like cold foam, a material based on polyurethane. Despite the close relationship between visco foam and cold foam, these two foam materials differ in their foam properties and are therefore used for different reasons in products such as mattress items and mattress toppers. Viscose, viscoelastic foams, or memory foam are various terms used for visco in mattresses, mattress toppers, cushions, and pillows. Memory foam comes from English. Memory foam means as much as memory foam. The term memory foam is used for visco because of its memory property. Memory foam retains the imprint of a body "in memory." Therefore, memory foam leads to less movement during sleep. Memory foam has the following properties:

  • Memory foam is highly pressure-relieving
  • Memory foam reduces movement during sleep
  • Memory foam is good for allergy sufferers
  • Memory foam adapts precisely to the body and is very soft
  • Memory foam is durable

Who is a foam mattress topper suitable for?
